Borg Warner Super T10
While General Motors was switching gearboxes around from 1963 to 1975 other companies such as Ford and AMC kept the T10 in production. So we got to see T10, and First Design Super T10 transmissions end up in these cars. It was also an opportunity for Borg Warner to design replacement Super T10's for the Muncie. These 4 speeds offered 9310 nickel gears, had a wide variety of gear ratios, and were available from any auto parts store carrying the Borg Warner parts line. A variation of this Super T10 ended up in GM cars from 1975 to 1983. Also as the 4 speed section of the 4+3 Corvette Overdrive in 1984 to 1988 Corvettes.
: There were two different ratio sets used in the Warner Super T10.
: The standard Wide Ratio 4-speed on the L48 and L82 had ratios of 2.64, 1.75, 1.34 and 1.00 to 1. It was rated at 325 lb-ft of input torque.
: The optional on the L82 only Close Ratio 4-speed had ratios of 2.43, 1.61, 1.23 and 1.00 to 1, and had a torque rating of 375 lb-ft.
: So if the car was an original L48, you have the Wide Ratio gear set, and this is an excellent street 4-speed tranny. The ratios 'steps' on this tranny are perfectly matched, especially with a 3.55 gear, and it is plenty tough enough, at least as tough as the Muncie, but I like the these ratios way better than the wide ratio Muncie. The Warner used a different coding system to designate Wide and Close ratio, and I really can't tell you what to look for as far as the numbers go. But if the car is an L48, and the VIN of the car is on the tranny, then it is definitely the 2.64 gear set, and I would keep this tranny and rebuild it. As far as a 4-speed setup for your car, the 2.64 Warner and a 3.55 is almost as good as it gets.
